Overview

California has approved unprecedented goals to achieve 100% carbon free energy and economy-wide carbon neutrality by 2045. Well known renewable energy sources like solar and wind paired with increased transportation and building electrification will play critical roles in advancing these goals. However, there is growing uncertainty about the state’s ability to fully decarbonize all sectors of its economy before 2045 by solely relying on these tools. There is also growing concern about the economic impact this transition could have on low-income communities and people of color, especially Latinos, many of whom are disproportionately impacted by both climate change and rising energy costs.  

There is increasing evidence that leveraging clean fuels, like renewable gases and hydrogen, can help local governments and the state achieve its clean energy and GHG goals more reliably and cost effectively. While these clean fuels are commonly used in other nations like Canada, Germany, Japan and China, their use in the US has been limited. Realizing their potential, energy providers in California are partnering to demonstrate their benefits and promote policies and investments to grow the industry. 

These alternative clean fuels provide unique decarbonization and storage benefits that make them appealing for energy providers and policymakers, especially in California, which is positioning itself as a clean fuels hub. These clean fuels also provide affordable energy options and local investment and job creation opportunities for disadvantaged communities who most need them.  

This panel will bring together energy providers, skilled labor, policymakers, and community leaders to discuss the role of clean fuels in California’s energy transition and its impact on the Latino community, including job and economic development opportunities.
